House in Connecticut

Year: 2016

Location: Connecticut

Category: Residential

The house is situated against a gentle hill at the western edge of a clearing in the woods, offering views of the surrounding forest and approach road. Three interlocking blocks are arranged to define a series of exterior spaces, that partially enclose the adjacent wooded slope and give privacy to the house while taking advantage of the solar orientation.

The interlocking volumes clad in cedar siding and local stone define the house. Their depth and texture accentuate the connection of the house to the site. Existing rock formations on the site have dictated where one can access and locate the  volumes without disrupting the terrain and the planting.

This sympathetic approach to the land and the palette of materials chosen combine to create a welcoming and sustainable new home for a writer and his family.
